The character catalogue and prompt-level control are excellent, and pairing it with a strong model can produce great roleplay. But our rubric weights reliability-adjacent factors — memory, privacy, value-in-practice — and Janitor’s dependence on external models and proxies drags those down. It rewards technical users and punishes everyone else.

Conversation quality

Potentially excellent — it is only as good as the model you connect. With a capable backend (e.g. DeepSeek), conversation is strong; on the limited default, it is mediocre.

Memory & consistency

Limited and inconsistent, bounded by the context window of whichever model you attach. There is no native long-term memory system like Nomi’s Identity Core.

Privacy & data handling

The biggest caveat. Many users route through third-party proxies, meaning intimate chats pass through services outside Janitor. Treat privacy as uncertain and avoid sharing anything you would not want a third party to hold.

The terms say Router Credits follow disclosed provider usage. A request can still consume credits once billable processing begins even if it is interrupted, times out, is filtered or is refused. Purchased credits may expire on or after 365 days. Ending janitor+ does not pause that clock: you need an active subscription to use the balance again before it expires or is otherwise cancelled.

Evidence status: the route matters more than the logo

This review is desk-researched from Janitor AI’s public product surface, integration behavior and recurring user reports. We did not benchmark every model, proxy and character combination. That would produce a false platform average: Janitor’s conversation, privacy and cost change when any part of the route changes.

“Bring your own model” can mean a direct API key, a third-party proxy, a hosted community route or another compatibility layer. A key billed to your own provider account gives you spend visibility, but it does not make the chat local. Prompts can still be processed by the API provider, Janitor and any proxy used between them.

Cancellation, refunds and deletion

For a subscription bought directly from Janitor, the documented route is Settings > Billing > Manage subscription or billing@janitorai.com. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid period, and Janitor normally does not provide a partial-period refund. Purchases through an app store or other distributor may be governed by that distributor’s cancellation and refund process.

Router Credit purchases are generally final. Account deletion is a separate and more destructive action: Janitor says it cancels unused purchased and promotional credits without refund. Cancel the subscription first if your goal is only to stop renewal; do not delete the account merely as a substitute for cancellation. 1. Create a separate provider key with a hard monthly spend cap.
2. Avoid unknown free proxies for intimate or identifying content.
3. Test with a throwaway character before importing real history.
4. Check what Janitor, the model provider and any proxy each log or retain.
5. Rotate or revoke the key when you stop using the route.
