About

An honest guide in a niche full of hype

CompanionScoutAI is an independent, research-based review site for AI companion, chatbot and roleplay apps. The category moves fast, markets hard, and rarely tells you the parts that matter — the real monthly cost, the data practices, the regulatory record. We exist to fill that gap.

What we believe

  • Independence first. No paid placement, ever. Rankings come only from our 100-point method.
  • Honesty over hype. Every review names the downsides — token costs, content restrictions, regulatory history.
  • Privacy is not a footnote. We weight data handling at 20% because these are intimate conversations.
  • Adults only. This is an 18+ site for adults evaluating adult products. We describe adult features factually and never display explicit content.

How we work

Our assessments are research-based — drawn from official product information, public pricing, documented company history, regulatory filings and synthesized community feedback. We don’t fake hands-on testing, and we refresh ranked pages roughly every 30 days because pricing and policies change so often. Read the full editorial policy.

How we’re funded

Reader-supported via affiliate links, which are always marked sponsored nofollow and disclosed. Commissions never affect a ranking. See our affiliate disclosure.

The editorial team

Alex Rowe

Founder & lead reviewer

Alex has tracked the AI companion category since its early days — when Replika was one of the only players and the category barely had a name. He built CompanionScoutAI to answer the question he kept hitting himself: which of these apps is actually worth paying for, and which ones are hype? The 100-point scoring rubric came out of months of reading official product documentation, public pricing pages, regulatory filings, and synthesized community feedback across Reddit, Discord and dedicated user communities.

Alex is not a therapist, data scientist, or professional app reviewer. He is an independent researcher who cares about privacy, transparent pricing, and honest information in a niche where that is genuinely scarce.

A note on wellbeing

Companion apps can offer company and low-pressure conversation, but they are not a substitute for professional mental-health care. If you’re struggling, please contact a qualified provider or a local crisis line — in the US, call or text 988.
