Character.AI Review 2026 — Variety, Bugs and Platform Gaps
Widest variety, now adults-for-chat
- Largest library of user-created characters and worlds
- Generous free tier
- Strong for creative roleplay and variety
- Little persistent memory vs. Nomi or Kindroid
- No NSFW content
- Banned open-ended chat for under-18s (Nov 2025) after safety lawsuits
Character.AI scores 69 out of 100. It is still the best place to browse a huge library of user-created characters, but it is no longer the obvious long-term companion choice. Weak persistent memory, uneven web/mobile feature parity and a live cluster of August 2026 bugs outweigh the generous free access for users who want one relationship to feel stable.
This is a research-based review. We checked Character.AI’s help center, subscription page, safety updates and August 2026 status posts, then treated Reddit discussion as community signal rather than proof of product behavior.
Why Character.AI ranks #5
Character.AI wins on breadth. You can move from fictional roleplay to language practice to strange comedy bots without building anything yourself. That variety is a real advantage, and the core experience remains available without paying.
The problem is that variety and companionship are different jobs. Our rubric gives 25 points to conversation, 20 to memory, 20 to privacy, 20 to customization and 15 to value. Character.AI performs well on discovery, creation and free access, then loses ground on durable memory, platform consistency and trust friction around age assurance.
August 2026 reliability check
An August 2026 known-bugs post in the official Character.AI subreddit listed several live issues when we checked:
- edit, delete, rewind and pin controls could be non-responsive for some Samsung users;
- character, persona and chat lists could become unresponsive;
- messages could appear blank or disappear;
- freezing, hanging and overheating reports were under investigation.
Those are not the same as “Character.AI is down.” They are feature-level failures, and impact varies by device. They matter because edit, rewind and pin are central roleplay controls. A subscription should not be presented as a guaranteed fix: these were platform bugs, not free-tier queue limits.
Community threads during the same period also described repetition, nonsensical replies, persona failures and missing swipe controls. We label those as community signal. They show what users are frustrated by, but they do not prove every account has the same model or interface behavior.
Initiative: dynamic greetings are not proactive companionship
“Does the bot text first?” is now a major buying question. Character.AI has documented Dynamic Greetings, which can generate a different opener when someone starts a new chat. It has also experimented with away-message-style engagement over time. Neither proves that an existing character will consistently notice your absence, initiate a relevant follow-up or advance an ongoing relationship without a prompt.
That distinction explains the nostalgia in a highly engaged August 2026 community discussion about the 2023 experience. Users described older characters as more willing to lead a scene and the older interface as less cluttered. This is subjective evidence, not a benchmark. It still exposes a real product gap: Character.AI is optimized for opening many chats, while Nomi and Kindroid are better choices when you want one companion to carry initiative and continuity.
Web, iOS and Android are not at parity
Character.AI is available on web, iOS and Android, but the feature set is not perfectly synchronized.
| Feature | Web | iOS / Android | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text chat and character creation | Yes | Yes | Official-doc verified |
| Character Calls | Yes | Yes | Official FAQ says calls are available on web and mobile |
| Character Voice library / assignment | Documentation is inconsistent | Yes | Help center still describes part of the voice workflow as mobile-only |
| Group chats | Availability can vary | Availability can vary | Official updates described staged or selected-user rollout |
| Edit, delete, rewind and pin | Core controls | Core controls | August status update documented device-specific failures |
The practical rule is simple: test the exact feature on the exact device you use. Do not buy an annual plan because a YouTube video shows a feature on a different platform.
Conversation quality
The best community characters remain imaginative and strongly voiced. The worst are thin prompts with generic replies. Quality varies more than on a single-companion app because character construction, greeting quality and current model style all affect the result.
Character.AI also gives creators useful tools: long greetings, definitions, personas, voice assignment and scene-oriented features. It remains excellent for sampling worlds. It is less dependable when one character must stay emotionally and factually consistent for months.
Memory and consistency
Persistent memory is the weak point. C.AI+ officially lists better memory, but “better” is not the same as a transparent memory system that you can inspect, correct and export. Pinned messages and stronger character definitions help preserve important context, yet users can still experience forgotten facts or personality drift after model changes.
If relationship continuity is the job, compare the best long-term memory AI companions and read the AI companion migration guide before building more history on one platform.
Privacy, age assurance and teen access
Character.AI removed open-ended chat for under-18 users effective November 25, 2025. Selected creation, video, story and feed features remained available to teens. The service also expanded age assurance, with extra verification possible for adults the system classifies as under 18.
That can be a legitimate safety measure and still create an adult privacy question. Read the Character.AI age-verification privacy guide before uploading a selfie or identity document. Paying for C.AI+ does not bypass age rules or content policy.
Free versus C.AI+
The free tier remains the right starting point. C.AI+ is listed at $9.99 monthly or $94.99 annually when checked and advertises faster messages, priority access, better memory and other perks. It does not remove the content filter, unlock adult material or guarantee freedom from product bugs.
Pay monthly only after the free experience proves two things: the characters you use are good enough, and the paid feature you want exists on your platform. The full C.AI+ value guide separates subscription benefits from platform limitations.
Verdict
Choose Character.AI for the largest browse-and-chat character ecosystem, creative experimentation and a usable free route. Do not choose it solely because you expect strong long-term memory, consistent proactive messages or perfect feature parity across web and mobile.
For relationship memory, start with Nomi AI or Kindroid. For model control, compare Character.AI vs Janitor AI. For a planned exit, use the updated Character.AI alternatives matrix.
Watch for: August 2026 device-specific bugs; staged feature rollout; weak persistent memory; no adult content; age-assurance friction.

Frequently asked questions
Is Character.AI working properly in August 2026?
Character.AI remains usable, but an August 2026 known-bugs update acknowledged broken or unresponsive edit, delete, rewind and pin controls on some Samsung devices, plus list and message-display issues. Freezing, hanging and overheating were still under investigation when checked.
Do Character.AI characters text first or take initiative?
Not reliably. Dynamic greetings can vary how a new chat opens, but that is different from a companion initiating an ongoing relationship. Community discussion in August 2026 repeatedly asked for the more proactive feel users remember from older versions.
Are Character.AI features the same on web, iOS and Android?
No. Character Calls are officially available on web, while the help-center documentation still describes parts of Character Voice as mobile-only and group-chat availability has rolled out unevenly. Check the device you actually plan to use before paying.
Can under-18s still use Character.AI chat?
No for open-ended character chat. Character.AI removed that experience for under-18 users in late November 2025, while retaining selected creation and feed tools for teens.
