Shallow. Bots do not maintain a deep, evolving memory of you, so conversations reset more than a dedicated companion would.
What happens to your privacy and data?
Chai’s privacy notice says conversation data is stored and may be used, after removal of personal identifiers, to improve and fine-tune models for all users. It also describes advertising to free users and advertising-attribution sharing. That is a stronger reason to avoid entering secrets, identifying details or material you would not want retained than a generic “private chat” label would suggest.
Chai’s Google Play data-safety section (checked October 25, 2026) adds the following:
- The app may share location, personal info and other data types with third parties.
- It may collect personal and financial info.
- It encrypts data in transit.
- You can request that your data be deleted.
These are disclosures Chai provided to Google, not an independent audit.
Account deletion is available under Profile > Settings > Delete Account, but deletion is not the same as guaranteed immediate erasure of every record. Chai says processing may continue for up to five years after account deletion, and longer where legal claims or obligations require it. Is Chai AI safe?
Use Chai for casual, non-identifying chat only. It allows mature content, Google Play rates it Mature 17+ in the US, and its privacy notice lets it use de-identified conversation data to improve models for everyone. Free users see ads, and Chai’s Play data-safety disclosure says it may share location, personal info and other data with third parties.

Reasonable — you can create bots and there is a large community catalogue, though the control depth trails purpose-built companion builders.
Is it worth the price?
Chai’s US Google Play listing (checked October 25, 2026) marks it as free with ads and in-app purchases, with individual purchases ranging from $0.99 to $899.99 per item. Google Play doesn’t break that range down by plan, and no official Chai page lists Premium or Ultra prices.
Chai’s company-facts page adds that “in some regions, use requires a paid subscription.” None of its public pages states a stable free-message allowance, so we can’t verify an exact daily cap from official evidence.
The last itemized prices we could verify came from Chai’s US App Store listing on October 11, 2026. That listing was unavailable when we checked again on October 25, so treat these as the most recent reference point, not a current offer:

Store entries aren’t a promise that every account sees the same offer or entitlement. Region, platform, account and promotion all change what checkout shows. Chai’s public pages still don’t document exact free-message limits, reset timing, Chai-specific refund rules, or whether unused time is refunded.

What is the evidence status and the catalogue reality?
Evidence checked October 25, 2026. Here’s where each part of this review now comes from:
- Pricing, ads and in-app purchases: Chai’s US Google Play listing. It showed version 0.4.434 (updated October 24, 2026), 10,000,000+ downloads, a Mature 17+ US content rating, and a 2.4-star average from about 796,000 reviews.
- iPhone availability: Apple’s US, UK, Canadian and Australian App Store pages for Chai’s app all returned “The page you’re looking for can’t be found”. That’s app ID 1544750895, the one linked from Chai’s site. A control listing for another app loaded normally.
- Chai’s own position: its company-facts page (last reviewed October 1, 2026) still lists iOS, and we found no official explanation for the change.
- Age limit: Chai’s App EULA (last updated July 28, 2026) restricts use to adults 18 and over.
- Privacy: conversation use, advertising and deletion-retention statements come from Chai’s privacy notice (checked October 11, 2026).
- Memory and bot quality: editorial synthesis from recurring user feedback, not a controlled lab result.
A community bot platform cannot be judged as though every bot has the same quality. The character prompt, creator effort, current model route and moderation state all shape the conversation. Our score describes the platform average and buying conditions, not a promise about a particular bot.

Choose based on the first limiter. If the content policy interrupts your stories, test Chai’s current boundaries. If ads and message limits interrupt them, compare the actual paid checkout.
