How to Delete AI Companion Data and Chat History

In short

To delete your AI companion data, request deletion in the app’s account settings, then submit a formal data-deletion request (GDPR/CCPA) to the company’s privacy contact to cover backups. Export your history first if you want a copy. Deletion timelines vary, so confirm in writing that data is purged.

Deleting your data is a right, not a favor — and in 2026, GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA/CPRA (California) back it up. But uninstalling the app does nothing on its own. Here’s the reliable way to actually remove your data.

Step 1 — Export first (optional but smart)

If you want a copy of your conversations, use the app’s export/download feature before deleting anything. Under GDPR/CCPA you can also formally request a copy. Confirm the file is complete before moving on.

Step 2 — Delete the account in-app

Find Settings → Account → Delete account (wording varies). This removes the visible account, but may not immediately clear server-side copies or backups.

  • Nomi AI / Kindroid / Replika / Character.AI: account deletion lives in account or privacy settings.
  • Candy AI: note billing appears as “Everai” — you may also need to cancel the subscription separately so you aren’t re-billed.

Step 3 — Submit a formal data-deletion request

To cover backups and any data the in-app toggle misses, email the company’s privacy contact and explicitly invoke your rights:

“Under [GDPR Article 17 / CCPA], I request permanent deletion of all personal data and conversation history associated with my account [email/ID], including backups. Please confirm in writing when this is complete.”

Step 4 — Verify

Confirm you can no longer log in or recover the account, and keep the company’s written confirmation. If a company can’t or won’t confirm deletion, that itself is a privacy signal — see our privacy checklist.

Why this matters

These are intimate conversations. Knowing you can cleanly export and delete is part of why we weight Privacy & data at 20% of our 100-point score. Apps with the clearest deletion paths (currently Kindroid) score better here for good reason.

What to include in a deletion request

Be specific. Ask for deletion of:

  • Account profile and login identifiers
  • Chat history
  • Saved memories
  • Companion prompts and personas
  • Uploaded images
  • Generated images and videos
  • Voice clips, call records or call metadata
  • Safety/moderation notes tied to your account
  • Backups, where legally required and technically possible

If you paid through a third party, the app may not be able to delete the card record itself. You may need to manage that separately through Apple, Google, Stripe, PayPal or your bank.

Cancel billing before account deletion

Do not delete the account first if you still need access to subscription settings. Cancel renewal, save confirmation, then delete data. If the app uses token packs, check whether unused tokens vanish at deletion and whether token purchases are refundable.

Our cancellation and refund guide covers the billing side. Treat billing cancellation and privacy deletion as two separate workflows.

App categories that need extra care

Visual girlfriend apps. Ask about generated media specifically. Image and video history can matter more than text history because it may include body, face or sexual preference data.

Voice/call apps. Ask whether audio clips are stored, transcribed or used to improve voice features. If the app offers phone-style calls, ask about call metadata too.

Bring-your-own-model apps. If you used Janitor AI or another app with an external API/proxy, delete from both places. The companion app and the model provider may keep different logs.

Wellness-leaning apps. If you used the app for emotional support, avoid sending detailed mental-health history in a support ticket. Your deletion request only needs enough information to identify the account.

If deletion fails

If a company does not respond, try the formal privacy contact listed in the policy, then the app-store support channel, then the payment processor for billing issues. Keep dates and screenshots. If you are covered by GDPR, CCPA/CPRA or another privacy law, mention the specific right you are invoking.

For a by-app checklist, use AI companion data deletion by app. For risk context, see the privacy incident tracker.

Frequently asked questions

Does deleting the app delete my data?

No. Uninstalling an app does not delete your account or your stored conversations. You must delete the account in-app and, to be thorough, submit a formal data-deletion request to the company so the data is removed from their servers and backups.

Can I get a copy of my AI companion chats before deleting?

Often yes. Many apps offer an export or data-download option, and GDPR/CCPA give you the right to request a copy. Export first, confirm you have the file, then proceed with deletion.

How long does data deletion take?

It varies by app and may take days to weeks to clear from backups. Ask the company to confirm in writing when deletion is complete, and re-check that you can no longer log in or recover the account.
