Joi AI scores 51 out of 100 after a verified August 2026 refresh. The product is more substantial than our old review showed: it has a large character catalogue, text and voice chat, photos and video calls where available. The catch is now clearer too—Premium can stack with separate bot subscriptions and a Neuron wallet, while the privacy policy says text and voice may help develop its AI.

This is an official-source verified, desk-researched review. We checked Joi’s live US terms, privacy policy, refund policy, support page, About page and public catalogue on August 15, 2026. We did not complete a paid chat or video-call test, so model quality, memory and logged-in checkout totals remain conservatively scored.

What Joi AI actually is

Joi’s terms identify the operator as Lanoto Solutions Inc. and describe an 18+ virtual-companion service. Users can communicate by text and voice, with a real-time video-call feature where device, region and plan allow it. The public site presents a large catalogue of Joi Original characters across romantic, supportive, fantasy and persona-style themes.

The About page positions the product around “AI-lationships” and says chat, photos and videos support romance and self-exploration. That is a stronger, more specific product description than the previous review’s vague “Character.AI-adjacent” label.

It still ranks #23 because our rubric rewards more than catalogue scale. Long-term memory remains weakly documented, the layered payment model is easy to underestimate, and the privacy policy is not suitable for buyers seeking no-training or local custody.

Verified cost structure: three possible layers

Joi’s current terms document three separate paid layers:

1. Premium: a recurring monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual subscription. Dollar prices vary by region, term and promotion and were not available as a stable public price table.
2. Bot Subscription: selected individual characters can require an additional purchase or subscription. The terms say an active Premium plan is required to access them.
3. Neurons: a wallet used for services outside Premium or bot subscriptions, including romantic or erotic messages, visual content, adult-themed scenarios and gifts.

The US terms provide unusually useful unit costs: one romantic message costs four Neurons to read; one photo costs up to 120; one video costs up to 1,900, depending on theme. That means one video can consume as many Neurons as hundreds of romantic messages. The missing part is the live dollar cost of a Neuron bundle, so calculate the conversion inside your account before paying.

Premium cancellation does not automatically cancel every Bot Subscription. The terms say a bot add-on may remain associated with the account while access is suspended if Premium ends. Review every subscription under the account rather than cancelling only the base plan.

Conversation quality

Joi’s character catalogue is far broader than the old review credited. Public profiles expose distinct greetings, roles, relationship hooks and large visible interaction counts. Text, voice and video routes create a more multimodal product than a basic persona-chat site.

We still score conversation at 15 out of 25 because catalogue copy is not a controlled chat test. Public profiles prove variety, not response depth, initiative or resistance to repetition. A paid test should check whether the character follows its defined voice after several topic changes and whether a video or voice interaction preserves the same persona as text.

Memory and consistency

The privacy policy says Joi can collect facts about a user’s life, interests, hobbies and people mentioned in chat to personalize conversation. That proves the system handles personal context. It does not prove transparent, editable long-term memory comparable with Nomi or Kindroid.

There is no strong public documentation of an inspectable memory store, exportable relationship summary or correction workflow. Until those exist or direct testing demonstrates durable recall, Joi remains at 9 out of 20 for memory. If continuity is the job, compare the best long-term memory companions first.

Privacy: now verified, not merely “unclear”

Joi’s privacy policy says it does not rent or sell information, but it also documents extensive processing:

• facts about you and people mentioned in chat can be hosted or analyzed by service providers;
• images can use external object or face-recognition services;
• private images, video or voice recordings can be hosted or analyzed externally;
• text and voice messages are used to improve virtual-friend quality and develop Joi’s AI;
• session recordings may be processed by Microsoft when the user consents.

This is not a no-training product. It is not local. Avoid names, addresses, health details, workplace information and identifiable intimate media unless you accept the documented processing path.

Account deletion is available and the terms call it irreversible. The privacy policy also says processing takes time, some disclosures already sent to third parties may not be deleted, legal or legitimate-interest retention can apply, and cached content may persist outside Joi’s control. Those caveats are normal enough to document—but important enough not to reduce to “delete anytime.”

Content-policy tension

Joi is explicitly adults-only, and its cost section says Neurons may cover romantic, erotic or sexually explicit messages and adult-themed scenarios. A later conduct section prohibits users from generating, requesting or sharing sexually explicit, pornographic or adult-themed content.

Those clauses pull in different directions. We will not invent an interpretation. Buyers should read the current terms and test permitted boundaries before buying Neurons for a use case that another section may prohibit. “Adult app” does not mean “no rules,” and a payment meter does not override the content policy.

Customization and ownership

Joi’s materials describe custom characters, and the catalogue shows wide persona variety. The terms also say that rights to a generated Virtual Character or Virtual Friend belong to Joi, while user-supplied content grants Joi a broad license for character generation. That matters for portability: do not assume a character’s likeness, generated media or relationship can be exported and reused elsewhere.

The policy around which users may upload content is nuanced, with special verification language for identified models and creators. Do not upload a real person’s likeness unless the account type and rights process explicitly permit it.

Cancellation, refunds and chargebacks

Joi’s refund page says subscriptions can be cancelled under Settings → My Subscriptions. Cancellation applies from the next subscription period; fees and used or unused Neurons in the current month are generally not refunded.

The published refund cases are limited. A first accidental Neuron-pack purchase can qualify for a full refund if unused or a partial refund if partly used. The policy asks users to contact support and says an initial reply should arrive within 72 hours. It does not promise a general no-questions-asked refund for dissatisfaction.

One clause deserves a bright warning: the refund page says private communications may be disclosed when needed to prove the validity of charges during a chargeback. That makes careful pre-purchase screenshots and support-first dispute handling especially important.
