How AI Companion Token Pricing Works
AI companion tokens are app credits for premium actions such as images, videos, voice, private packs or higher model limits. They are separate from the monthly subscription. Estimate cost by adding the base plan to expected token top-ups, then test monthly before buying annual.
Token pricing is the reason a cheap AI companion subscription can stop feeling cheap.
The base plan might say $10, $13 or $20 per month. Then images, voice, videos, private packs or faster model access spend from a separate token balance. If you mostly chat, the base price may be close to your real bill. If you use generated media daily, the base price is only the floor.
What tokens buy
Consumer companion-app tokens usually pay for app features, not raw AI model usage. Common token sinks include:
- AI photos or selfies
- Short videos
- Voice messages or calls
- Private content packs
- Premium model replies
- Extra companions or personas
- Faster generation or priority queues

The three pricing patterns
Flat subscription. Nomi AI is close to this model: the subscription is the main price and the value question is whether the app is worth the monthly fee.
Subscription plus credits. Candy AI, Kupid AI, HeraHaven and other visual companion apps are closer to this pattern. The subscription opens the experience, while media features can require credits or tokens.
Free app plus external cost. Janitor AI is free as an app, but users may bring their own model or API setup. That can be cheaper for technical users and confusing for everyone else.
A practical cost formula
Use this before subscribing:
Real monthly cost = subscription + expected top-ups + paid add-ons
Then ask:
- Which actions spend tokens?
- How many tokens are included each month?
- Do unused tokens roll over?
- Can you still text chat after running out?
- Does voice spend tokens?
- Does image/video generation spend tokens?
- Are private packs one-time purchases or recurring costs?
If the app does not answer those questions clearly, treat the plan as high-risk for surprise cost.
Red flags before you pay
Be careful when a pricing page advertises a low annual-equivalent price but does not explain token burn. Annual billing can make the subscription look cheaper while locking you into a credit system you have not tested yet.
Also watch for vague labels like “coins”, “gems”, “credits”, “energy” or “premium actions.” The name changes by app, but the budget effect is the same.
Best-fit rule
If you want predictable spend, choose a flatter subscription and avoid media-heavy habits. If you want visuals, build a token budget from day one. If the app is signup-gated, do not assume “free” means usable.
